QM&A Open Call

For the 4th time curators from Improper Walls will work with the QUESTION ME & ANSWER Artist Collective. If you are interested in working together and looking for a new challenge or/and opportunities, here is a description of the ongoing open call.
Every year we publish an open call inviting artists of all disciplines to apply and become part of the next QM&A Artist Collective. With the help of an external jury we select up to 16 artists out of all applications. The selected artists are divided in groups of two or three people with which they will be co-creating an artwork. Our focus is on bringing together people who work in different disciplines and have a different perspective on Vienna’s art sector and its inclusivity. In most cases that means that we pair an artist who only recently arrived in Vienna as a migrant or refugee with an artist who has already been living in Vienna for a long time. The groups have several months’ time to produce artworks together that are then exhibited as part of a group show of the entire QM&A Artist Collective. This exhibition will take place in a suitable gallery space in Vienna that has yet to be confirmed. All groups are assigned a curator to support their artistic process.
While the artists primarily work with their group of two to three artists, different events are organized for the entire collective to get to know each other and other actors in the Viennese art scene better.
The events can include guided tours in museums, studio visits and talks with various actors inside the Viennese cultural sector. Additionally, we facilitate solo exhibits or smaller group exhibits for the selected artists in various galleries we work with.

– Open to:
artists already based in and around Vienna for a long time
artists new to Vienna who have experienced displacement
who are willing to co-create a collaborative mixed media art project
– Format & media:
unrestricted (photography, performance, sound, painting, sculpture, etc)
– Every submission requires:
a short biography of the artist, three examples of previous works with description, max. A4 motivation text; please note that submissions that do not include a photo or video of previous works cannot be considered
– Language of the application:
English and German

We will ensure that the open call is advertised as widely and intensively as possible and reaches all target groups to the same extent so that all possible participants get the same chance to apply. The selection is done by an external jury in collaboration with the team of QUESTION ME & ANSWER and is based on a variety of different criteria.
The selection will be completed by April 17, 2021.

The artist fee is 350€. Additionally, all production costs are paid.
