EXT. IMPROPER WALLS - EVENING

In the back of Improper Walls. Urtė Špeirokaitė and Justina Špeirokaitė are sitting on the couch. Light is dimmed. Two glasses of wine on the coffee table. Silence. Twenty seconds into the scene a conversation starts.

URTĖ

Everything changed with starting Improper Walls. I had never dared to dream about my own space where I am free to do anything I want. A place where ideas turn into actions - “Awesome, let’s do it!”. Where passion outgrows tiredness.

Justina stands up, goes to their small bar, finds a bottle of red wine, bings it to the coffee table, pours to both, and sits back on the couch.

JUSTINA

It was the first serious commitment I made. Very scary one but very worth it. Actually I wanted to “do nothing”, or maybe I was searching (it’s getting hard to remember). But I will never forget how much fear I felt after realization of what we just did came. And somehow my passion for “nothing” turned into passion for Improper Walls. Same pasion artist feels to create. Improper Walls is an artwork and this artwork is life.

URTĖ

Ah and not to forget about all these great people I’ve had the opportunity to meet. I have a huge respect for people with passion for what they do. Because of Improper Walls I can help others to realize their ideas. I am very happy to take this role in the art and culture world.

JUSTINA

I learn how to take risks. Nothing is too difficult. Everything is possible. Even when you literally know no one and just a tiny bit about art in general and even less about the art scene in Vienna.

Both look at each other, Smile and cheer their glasses.

JUSTINA

Happy birthday!

URTĖ

Happy 6th anniversary!

Both stand up, turn off the lights and leave. The couch and unwashed glass of wine are now alone, waiting for everyone to come back the next day.

FADE TO BLACK

“The imaginative nature of art enables us to move from the static here and now to transcend both time and location, and envision ourselves in new ways.” (Cheri Sterman)

Art functions as representation - not as a “reflection” of individual  or collective identity but as a vital player in shaping the identity of its maker, subject, and audience. That means an exhibition functions as a narrative “written” by curatorial choices, a narrative that also shapes identity. And we keep on shaping and reshaping our identities, as our experiences change, as we keep making diverse curatorial choices.

In this special edition dedicated to our 6th anniversary, we decided to focus on identities. Taking our own identities into account as being a measure of our personal and collective growth, we spoke with artists, musicians, a fashion designer and a philosopher about their takes on it.

Blanca Amoros, Anne-Sophie Wass, Made of Millions, Timna Weber, DJ Mishka, Harz, Peter Millard, Camila Gurgel, Wierheart & Yu Run, Flora Löffelmann

Just before you dive into reading our newest edition, we would like to thank you all who was, is and will become part of our family. We are creating our biggest art work - life, together. And maybe together we could make Carmen Salas dream come true: “In my dream, the traditional exhibition spaces and art objects (material objects) no longer exist, and artists, cultural agents and creative practitioners collaborate with citizens, communities and professionals from other sectors (scientists, farmers and politicians) to design better systems and to co-create activities and programmes that encourage creativity and bring about social change.”

Happy next n years of self-exploration and identifying who we are through what we do together!

Lots of love
