One million people work in "system-relevant" professions throughout Austria. 65% of them are women and most of them are migrants. These are professions with low pay and high psychological and physical stress. Whether elderly care, cashiers, child care, cleaning, or transportation, our system would collapse without these professions. Accordingly, there was much applause at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, their services are not recognized politically or socially, let alone fairly rewarded financially.
Luna Al-Mousli has portrayed, and Clara Berlinski illustrated those people who have been most challenged since the beginning of the pandemic and have now reached the edge of their capacities. They demand fundamental changes, recognition and upgrading: clapping alone is not enough!

Eine Million Menschen arbeiten österreichweit in »systemrelevanten« Berufen. 65 % davon sind Frauen und größtenteils Migrant*innen. Es sind Berufe mit schlechter Bezahlung, hoher psychischer und körperlicher Belastung. Ob Altenpflege, Lebensmittelverkauf, Kinderbetreuung, Reinigung oder Transportwesen, ohne diese Berufe würde unser System zusammenbrechen. Dementsprechend viel wurde zu Beginn der Corona-Pandemie geklatscht, doch ihre Leistungen werden weder politisch noch gesellschaftlich anerkannt, geschweige denn finanziell gerecht entlohnt.
Luna Al-Mousli hat jene Menschen porträtiert und Clara Berlinski illustrierte, die seit Beginn der Pandemie am meisten gefordert sind und mittlerweile am Rand ihrer Kapazitäten angelangt sind. Sie fordern grundlegende Veränderungen, Anerkennung und Aufwertung: Klatschen allein reicht nicht!

Our first IMPROPER READING will take place during the current show Klatschen reicht nicht! (Reboot the system!) by Luna Al-Mousli & Clara Berlinski.
Aiming to reflect on the topics stressed out by the exhibition, we will read and discuss social hierarchy, gender equality, unpaid labour, and feminism.
