INTERVIEW WITH GORSAD

-by Justina Speirokaite (curator at Improper Walls)

What does GORSAD stand for?
GORSAD – is a project about youth.

Who is GORSAD?
GORSAD - the Kyiv-based trio of artists, Masha Romaniuk, Ulik Romaniuk, and Vitya Vasyliev, specialised in alternative photography and provocative video. GORSAD’s works are mainly focused on youth, feelings and sexuality in all their peculiarities and oddities.

How have you been?
We are going through a very difficult moment for our country now. The constant barbaric attacks of the russian troops kill dozens of civilians every day, and a huge number of cities and towns are destroyed. Ukrainian armed forces give them a constant rebuff. Now the world community is actively helping Ukraine and we hope for our soonest victory.

What does the process of your work look like?
The whole process of shooting is going like a friendly meeting, as many of those whom we photograph are our friends.

You work mainly with very young people. Why?
Because young people are much more open and express inappropriate emotions. We try not to work with professional models as they often look fake and unnatural.

Who is a teenager from Kyiv?
As a rule, these are very sincere people who lead a carefree lifestyle and do not think about what will happen tomorrow; they just live for today.

What is your current project?
We simultaneously host several exhibitions in Germany, Ukraine and France to raise funds for the victims of hostilities in our country.
