Finally, reopening!

-by Barbora Horská (Curator / Editor-in-chief of Improper Dose)

Yes, at the beginning of this month, we too were allowed to open our doors again, just in time to have at least a soft opening of our collaborative group show Shame Shouldn't Be A Symptom.

And while we embrace the joy of getting back to normal, we are also trying to keep in mind how privileged that "normal" is. At least, for some of us. Last month we said no shame, and indeed, there is no shame in being white or male or straight, cis-gender, or just an EU citizen living in a developed western European country. But an important note is there is also no pride in it. Not only because none of those things come of one's own doing, but they also don't require any additional defense to be lived openly. May everyone keeps that in mind as we approach June, aka Pride Month, and as we gather again next week on Platz der Menschenrechte to remind the police that Black Lives Matter. And whoever would still feel the urge to add that all lives matter, let it be about Palestinians. Because yes, their lives matter, too.

Meanwhile, read through our interviews with Lithuanian artist Živilė Žvėrūna, photographer Lisa Kainzbauer, and Cheap Mozart's Jovan Glušica.

We also talked to Verena Tscherner and Joerg Auzinger about their media sculpture Collective Action Viewer, on display at Karlsplatz as part of the Vienna Biennale for Change 2021 and Angewandte Festival.

And while there is no more plant erotica this month, you can still take a closer look at Andrea Z Scharf's Shadow or indulge yourself in Pedro del Real's comic memoir.

Last but not least, introducing our partners Made of Millions and how we got to know them, why we are collaborating, and what the Shame shouldn't be a symptom project is all about.

The exhibition is still on until the 9th of June. We are open traditionally from Wednesday to Thursday, 3–7 PM, and virtually anytime.

Join us this Wednesday for an Artist Talk with Mariana Rebola and a Thursday performance of Qasi BABb Pink. Save the date for Therapy Talk with psychoanalyst Daniela Kammerer, telling us more about the professional help in Vienna. If you missed our conversation with another featured artist, Peter Pflügler, here you can learn more about his experience with intergenerational transmission of trauma.

See you next month, hopefully with a lot more awareness than shame.

Special thanks go this month to our very own Lina Piskernik for hearing out my last-minute call to proofread all the featured interviews.
