How was masculinity represented in the long history of art? Is there only one masculinity - or are there several? These questions arise during the guided tour through the Kunsthistorisches Museum, offered by Contemporary Matters. Within approximately one hour, two critical art historians will lead from heroic depictions of warlords and seductive casanovas to sensitive representations of male consciousness and insecurities. The tour will show the plurality of masculine identity within the last six hundred centuries.

Contemporary Matters is a Vienna-based platform raising critical awareness of the role of “the contemporary” in the increasingly transdisciplinary field of art history. The collective encourages critical discourse through events, debates, podcasts and a peer-reviewed journal. By avoiding fixed structures and institutional hierarchies, Contemporary Matters acts as a platform for individual voices to be heard, centering its efforts on the empowering effect of inclusion and participation.
