Submission deadline: June 30, 2019

Selected artists will be informed by July 14, 2019

Exhibition opening: September 25, 2019

Exhibition duration: September 26 - October 11, 2019

Together with the NGO β€œFlΓΌchtlinge Willkommen Γ–sterreich” Improper Walls will initiate a new project that links the central topic of shared housing to artistic research and work. The NGO supports refugees in finding a room in a shared flat. Similarly, this project promotes the idea of sharing space and resources such as studio space and material for artistic work. This exhibition is part of the project π™Œπ™ͺπ™šπ™¨π™©π™žπ™€π™£ π™ˆπ™š & π˜Όπ™£π™¨π™¬π™šπ™§. Its main goal is to support artists with a refugee background in rebuilding their artistic career in Austria. The basis of this project is supporting people in active networking inside the art scene. Building on this, various courses will be offered that convey essential skills for dealing with the Austrian art market. The first part of π™Œπ™ͺπ™šπ™¨π™©π™žπ™€π™£ π™ˆπ™š & π˜Όπ™£π™¨π™¬π™šπ™§ will be realized as part of an art exhibition. With the help of an open call, artists will be selected who will create a work of art in pairs. The couple consists of a person with experience of displacement and a person without. Through the personal exchange of experiences, artists will have the opportunity to develop an artistic, transdisciplinary project. This should promote active exchange and engagement with the reality of the life of the other. The works will be exhibited at the end of September as part of an exhibition at Improper Walls. This will promote the art of those newly arrived in Austria and make them more present on the Austrian art market. The primary goal, however, remains networking-building between artists with different backgrounds.

The application to participate in the project is open to all artists based in and around Vienna with experience of displacement and artists based in and around Vienna without the experience of displacement willing to co-create a collaborative transmedial art project. We will ensure that the Open Call is advertised as widely and intensively as possible and reaches all target groups to the same extent. After conducting an open call, about 10-14 artists will be selected and have the opportunity to work together in pairs. The cooperation is limited to two months. Within this period, Improper Walls will organize four meetings (twice a month) to help with documentation, process development, and advice for the artists. At the end of September, the works will be presented as part of an exhibition.
